The Tissot Telemeter 1938 T142.462.16.032.00 draws its identity from an important chapter in the brand’s sports-timing history. Its design recalls the Tissot chronograph used by timekeeper Vital Thiébaud during an Alpine ski race in Villars-sur-Ollon in 1938, translating that period instrument into a sophisticated contemporary mechanical watch.
Its white archive-inspired dial presents a richly detailed yet balanced arrangement. Two railway-style subdials display the running seconds and 30-minute chronograph total, while condensed Arabic numerals and blue-toned hands strengthen its period character. A red spiral tachymeter scale measures speed over a known distance, while the blue telemeter scale can calculate the distance of an event that is seen before it is heard.
The 42 mm case is crafted from 316L stainless steel with carefully combined brushed and polished surfaces. Ergonomic chronograph pushers and an oversized fluted crown reference early sports chronographs, while a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides promotes clarity across the information-rich dial. The case measures 13.85 mm thick and is water-resistant to 30 metres.
Powering the watch is the Valjoux A05.231 automatic chronograph calibre. This upgraded mechanical movement incorporates a Nivachron™ balance spring for improved resistance to everyday magnetic fields and provides an extended power reserve of up to 68 hours. The exhibition caseback offers a view of the movement and its specially styled Tissot Heritage rotor.
A brown embossed leather strap complements the warmth and vintage character of the dial. It is secured by a butterfly clasp with push-buttons, providing the traditional appearance of leather with the convenience and security of a folding clasp. Distinctive without becoming theatrical, the Telemeter 1938 brings authentic timing functionality and modern mechanical performance to Tissot’s heritage aesthetic.
A heritage chronograph with authentic measurement scales, modern endurance and unmistakable 1930s character.
